As knitwear designers, we sometimes use a stitch pattern for several designs, claiming that the stitch pattern is not finished with us yet and that it wants to appear again in another design. Such is the case for this eyelet stitch that I used for the Ashley, Jillian, and Bonnie cowls. In the Dolores capelet, shaping is incorporated into the eyelets to create a piece that sits comfortably on your shoulders and shows off the color changes of a lovely gradient yarn cake.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Required Skills: Cast on, knit, purl, eyelets, bind off.
Sizes: Women’s sizes S, M (L, XL, XXL). Sample shown in size L.
Finished Measurements: Circumference at lower edge 46, 50 (54, 58, 62)“ / 117, 127 (137, 147, 157)cm; length from neckline to lower edge 12, 13 (13, 14, 14)” / 30, 33 (33, 36, 36) cm
Gauge: 22 sts and 28 rows = 4” / 10cm in stockinette stitch; 16 sts and 28 rows = 4” / 10cm in pattern stitch. Gauge is not critical for this project but a different gauge will affect yarn requirements and size of finished piece. Take time to check gauge.
Materials:
Project begins with a crochet cast on which is joined to work in the round. Although any cast on will do for this project, the crochet cast on is used because it mimics a standard bind off. After casting on and joining to work in-the-round, a garter ridge border is worked, followed by the eyelet stitch pattern. Decreases are worked within the pattern stitch to accommodate the shaping needed at the shoulders and neckline. For sizes XL and XXL, it is necessary to work the piece a few inches shorter before the first decrease round to accommodate the yardage in one skein of Trendsetter Yarns Merino Eclipse.

- Needles: US 7 / 4.5mm 20” and 30” circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
