IT ISN'T A PAPERWORK PROBLEM

There's a drawer, or a stack on the counter, or a bag in the car. You shut it again after about ten seconds.

Here's what's actually going on: every sheet in that pile is a decision you haven't made. Open one and it asks you something — pay this, ring them, find the other document, decide whether it still matters. Filing is the cheap part. Deciding is the expensive part, and the pile is a queue of expensive parts.

Which is also why "just sort it properly" never works. Sorting doesn't decide anything. It moves the queue.

A TO-DO PILE IS A NEVER-DONE PILE

That warning isn't ours — it's the standing advice about keeping "to sort" stacks at all: they quietly grow guilt while doing no work.

So this book has no "to sort" tray. Every item leaves with a verdict on the day you write it down, and one of the four verdicts is letting it go.

WHAT'S INSIDE — 31 PAGES, FIVE STAGES

TEN SHEETS COME TWICE

Each one filled in as a specimen first, so you can see it working without reading instructions. Then the identical sheet, blank, for your pile. Eleven blanks to print again and again.

STAGE ONE · EMPTY IT

· What's in it — every item out of the drawer, bag, counter and car, one line each. Don't open, don't decide, don't start. Seeing the real size of it is the whole job, and it's almost always smaller than it felt.

STAGE TWO · DECIDE

· The verdict sheet — one mark per line, four columns. Plus an "if ignored" column as the tiebreaker: if ignoring it costs money or a deadline, it isn't verdict four.

STAGE THREE · THE FOUR TRAYS

· Do it now — with a "guess the minutes" and an "actually took" column, so you learn which of your five-minute jobs is really five minutes

· Give it a date — the date, what it's waiting on, and whether it's in the calendar. A date that isn't in your calendar isn't a date.

· Someone else's — whose it is and when you'll chase them. Handing something over without a chase date is how it comes back.

· Let it go — written down, then binned, so letting go feels like a decision rather than a lapse.

STAGE FOUR · WHAT IT COST

· What avoidance cost — the late fee, the renewal that auto-renewed at the worst rate, the thing bought twice. Not a guilt page: the last column is "what would stop it", and that's the only column that changes anything.

· Things that expire — the category that costs the most and warns you the least. Written once, checked twice a year.

STAGE FIVE · KEEP IT DOWN

· The weekly ten minutes — same slot, four moves, twelve weeks of boxes. Miss three in a row and the instruction is to move the slot, not to restart the count.

· Calls you had to make twice — names and reference numbers, so you never start from scratch with a call centre again.

WHAT IT ISN'T

Not a daily or weekly planner — we make those separately and this isn't one. Not a list of coping strategies. Not medical advice, not a diagnosis, and not a treatment. It's a paper sorting system, and it's honest about being only that.

We'd also rather you never wrote an account number in it. The name of the thing and a date is enough on every sheet here, and a notebook full of account numbers is a bad thing to lose.

Every name, figure and situation in the completed specimens is invented.

FORMATS

Both A4 and US Letter, each drawn natively — not one scaled out of the other. Print at 100%, or import into GoodNotes, Notability or any PDF app and write on it with a stylus. There are no tappable circles and no fillable form fields; those don't work reliably in note-taking apps, so everything is drawn to be marked by hand.
