Designed for the Happiness-themed Yarnover Truck club, the Happiness Shawl is a repetitive and soothing project that allows you to focus on the beauty of the colors and the feel of the yarn. It’s a reminder that no matter what else is going on, we can pick up our hooks and yarn and give ourselves a moment of quiet contentment.

The pattern is easy to memorize and beginner friendly, using only dc, sc, and ch stitches. It's easily adjustable, so you can work it to size and make sure you use up every scrap of yarn. And it includes a bunch of customization notes so you can make it all solid, all lace, or whatever combination of rows speaks to you.

Sample

Sample used Apple Tree Knits Copper Sock Gradient, 435yds/100g in Relaxation Gradient
Thanks to Yarnover Truck for providing the yarn for the pattern sample!

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors

The sample was made with just 435yds/100g, but at that yardage it ends up as a smaller shawlette. The shawl is easily adjustable and can easily be worked to size, so for a larger shawl just add more yardage!

The stitch pattern pairs perfectly with a gradient, and it’s designed so the edging can be added at almost any point, so you can use up every scrap of yarn. For a larger gradient shawl, use a larger ball of yarn or work two gradients back to back.

The lace is large enough to be visible even with a variegated yarn and it’s detailed enough to look amazing with a solid or tonal too.

The sample was made with fingering weight, but the pattern works well with anything from a lace to worsted.

Size

Size will vary based on gauge, yardage, and adjustments made. When worked as stated, shawl has a wingspan of 38”/96.5cm and measures 18”/46cm down the back. Size can easily be adjusted by working more repeats.

Skills Required

Printing

Both a regular and printer friendly version are available! The regular version includes large photos on the first page and the last two pages, so print accordingly. The printer-friendly version has only one photo on the cover page, and less spacing so the pattern takes up fewer pages. For more details on what the printer-friendly version includes, see this page. If you are working from the printer-friendly version and are having trouble with a pattern, I strongly recommend checking the regular version. The text will be easier to read and it might have more detailed instructions.

Screen Reader Compatibility

The main pattern pdf is designed to be screen reader compatible. The text is all in one column and headers are formatted according to the style sheet. The pattern is written out completely and the images have descriptive alt text.
