Sometimes things spiral out of control and there’s nothing to do but hook your way through, hoping it’ll all work itself out eventually. The Spiral Out Shawl features a super unique construction for an unusual and eye-catching shawl. It takes almost no focus to work up, so you can hook while you work your way through whatever’s going on. The shawl is completely adjustable and can be made to size, and it's specifically designed to work well with busy hand dyed yarns.

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors

The pattern is designed to use two full skeins of fingering, one in each of two contrasting colors. It uses an equal amount of each color, and works well with any color style, from variegated to solid to gradient, but the stripingin in the spiral will only be visible if the colors contrast well with each other.

If you’re using two gradients, I recommend working them back to back or picking two different colorways. If you’re working with self-striping, I recommend using two different colorways. If you’re using a variegated yarn, pair it with a tonal/semisolid, or choose another variegated that doesn’t have the same colors and provides a stark contrast.

The pattern uses fingering weight but can easily be worked in a worsted or even larger, and notes are included for adjusting the pattern size.

I recommend using a natural fiber that can be blocked.

Gauge

19 sts and 10 rows = 4”/10cm in dc. Gauge swatch is worked in the round and measurements are taken after blocking. Do not stretch the fabric when checking gauge. Gauge is not essential to this pattern as a shawl that is slightly larger or smaller will still fit nicely, and the shawl can also be easily adjusted in length and width. Differences in gauge will change the finished size and will also impact the yardage required.

Size

When gauge is met, 928yds/200g of fingering weight will net a shawl that has a wingspan of 66”/168cm and measures 25”/64cm down the back. Size can be customized by working extra/fewer repeats.
