Sometimes the only way forward is to burn it all down and start again. Cut out the toxicity, smash the broken systems, and find a new way forward. Instead of trying to tweak the system so it’s less damaging, envision something different and better. It starts simple, but like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the new path can grow into something amazing.

The From the Ashes Shawl is quick to work up and uses only simple stitches, making it accessible even to newer crocheters. Worked in one piece from the top down, it's a wide and shallow triangle with a neck that curves upwards for easy wearing and styling. The pattern can end on any 4th row and the edging is incorporated into the stitch pattern so you can easily work the shawl to size or use up every scrap of yarn.

The pattern is written in US terms. It includes both written and charted instructions.

Gauge

8 rows = 4”/10cm measured down the spine. Gauge swatch is worked flat and measurements are taken after blocking. Do not stretch the fabric when checking gauge. Gauge may vary based on how you block. Gauge is not essential as a shawl that is slightly larger or smaller will still fit nicely, and the shawl can also be easily worked to size. Differences in gauge will change the finished size and will also impact the yardage required.

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors

The pattern is written for 1-2 skeins of fingering weight, but would look amazing in anything from laceweight to aran. One skein is enough for a shawl, but you can make it larger by adding more skeins. The pattern is designed to be easily adjusted - just work as many repeats as your yardage allows!

The lace stitch pattern shines in a tonal or solid and would look amazing in a gradient or a yarn with large stripes of colors. It breaks up a variegated yarn really nicely to minimize pooling, but the color variegation will obscure some of the lace.

Size and Shape

When gauge is met, 420yds/113g of fingering weight will net a shawl that has a wingspan of 44”/112cm and measures 19”/48cm down the back. 840yds/226g of fingering weight will net a shawl that has a wingspan of 62”/157.5cm and measures 27”/68.5cm down the back. Size can be customized by working extra/fewer repeats.

Skills required

This is a beginner-friendly pattern. It uses ch, sc, dc, working into the ch-space, and working flat. There are repeats in the pattern, but no nested repeats.

Shape and Construction

The From the Ashes Shawl is a symmetrical triangle that’s slightly shallower and wider. It’s worked in one piece from the top down.
