The Lake Shore Shawl is a lazy afternoon at the lake, the perfect vacation in yarn form. It’s soothing and serene - the colors transition gently and the mindless repeat requires almost no counting, allowing you to focus on the feel of the yarn, the beauty of the colors, and the joy of crafting.

This is a beginner-friendly pattern, using just sc and dc, and has a super easy repeat for mindless crafting. The Lake Shore Shawl is specifically designed to use up variegated yarns - pick your two favorite variegated colors, find a tonal that brings them together, and start hooking! The pattern includes instructions for working the shawl with 2 colors or 3, adding additional colors, or customizing the striping, as well as notes for adjusting the shape.

Yarn and yardage

The pattern calls for sport weight, but can easily be worked in any weight.

The sample uses two skeins of variegated and one tonal, and the pattern also includes instructions for using just two colors. You can easily extend the pattern by adding more colors, but I recommend keeping the tonal consistent throughout the pattern. The ratio of tonal to variegated changes as the shawl grows and you’ll need more tonal for each skein added.

The pattern is designed to use up busy colors like a variegated, but you can easily work it in self-striping, gradient, or tonals. It works best with colors that contrast each other.

Gauge

18 sts and 9 rows = 4”/10cm in dc. Gauge is not essential to this pattern as a shawl that is slightly larger or smaller will still fit nicely, and the shawl can also be easily adjusted in length and width. Differences in gauge will change the finished size and will also impact the yardage required.

Size

Size can be customized by working extra/fewer repeats. When gauge is met, 650yds/200g will net a shawl that has a wingspan of 32”/81cm and measures 16”/41cm down the back. 975yds/300g will net a shawl that has a wingspan of 45.5”/115.5cm and measures 23”/58.5cm down the back.

changing colors
This is a beginner pattern that’s all about the color play. It’s super mindless and has an easily memorized repeat.

Construction

The pattern is worked top down. It has four sections and the neck curves sharply upwards. The notes have instructions for adjusting the neck so it’s flatter across the top.
The shape is specifically designed to be easy to wear and style. It stays on the shoulder without a shawl pin, and wraps around like a great big hug.

Printing

Both a regular and printer friendly version are available! The regular version includes large photos on the first page and the last three pages, so print accordingly. If you are working from the printer-friendly version and are having trouble with a pattern, I strongly recommend checking the regular version. The text will be easier to read and it might have more detailed instructions.
