Diadem Shawl

Unleash your inner royal with the Diadem Shawl! Crocheted in one piece from the top down, the pattern uses only beginner stitches and straightforward repeats, for a piece that is easy to work up and gorgeous to wear.

The lace stitch pattern was designed to be soothing to work up. The three row repeat is easy to memorize and has a built in edging, so you can work the shawl to any size or yardage. It's a forgiving pattern, so that a missed stitch here or there can be ignored rather than fixed. And you never have to count higher than 4, for a project that requires just enough focus to be a distraction from everything going on.

Gauge

2 repeats down the spine = 4”/10cm. Gauge swatch is worked flat and measurements are taken after blocking. Do not stretch the fabric when checking gauge. Gauge may vary based on how you block. Gauge is not essential as a shawl that is slightly larger or smaller will still fit nicely, and the shawl can also be easily adjusted in length and width. Differences in gauge will change the finished size and will also impact the yardage required.

Yarn and Colors

The pattern works best in a solid, tonal, or gradient colorway. The lace works well to break up a variegated color, but too much variegation will obscure the lace pattern. The pattern has a built in edging, which makes it ideal for gradients.

The pattern calls for a worsted weight, but also works well in anything from lace to worsted weight.

Yardage and Sizes

The shawl is fully adjustable and can end on any third row. The sample was made with 550yds/502m/250g, but the pattern also includes instructions for making a shawl with 100g or 200g.

Construction

The pattern is worked in one piece from the top down. It features a three row repeat and the edging is built into the repeat - the pattern can end on any third row.

Overview of the Finished Object

The shawl features an all-over lace pattern. The lace is staggered. Increases are worked down a center spine and the lace grows out of the increases in a way that perfectly matches the rest of the shawl.
