Sugar Butter Flour Shawl

Inspired by Waitress the Musical and the way Jenna, the main character, bakes her way to a better life.

For centuries, society has told us that women's work is inconsequential. That women belong in the house, away from the spaces where important decisions are made. But we know better. For generations, women have used their skills and creativity as a source of friendships and support, as a way to build a better community and world.

The shawl starts with simple ingredients and mindless rows, but ends with a flourish that reminds of us we are so much more than the limitations others put on us - just look at the amazing things we can do.

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors

The pattern as stated uses three skeins of fingering weight, 463yds/423m/100g in each of three coordinating colors. It can be worked in anything from a lace to a worsted, but the yardage and number of skeins will vary significantly.

The pattern is designed for a fade, with three colors that blend from one into the next, but works well with any three coordinating colors. Colors A & B can be any color style, from solid to variegated. The cabled edging shows up best when color C doesn’t have too much color variation.

The pattern can easily be customized to work with different yardages - add/remove rows from any section, work more/fewer fade rows, skip some rows in the edging. There’s detailed notes for customizing the colors and fades.

If you are customizing the yardage or the number of colors, note that earlier rows take significantly less yardage than later rows - you may want to use 1 skein of color A and more skeins of colors B, C, and on.

Skills Required

The body of the shawl is fairly simple, but the edging is intermediate/advanced as it combines cables and basic lace.

ch, sc, dc, Front post/back post crochet, Twisted stitches, Cables (twisted fp/bp crochet), Counting stitches, Working into the ch-space, Working flat, Changing colors, Weaving in ends as you go (optional)

Construction

The shawl is worked in one piece, from the top down. The fade sections are worked so you don’t have to cut the yarn and you’ll have, at most, 2-4 ends to weave in per color worked.

Overview of the Finished Object

The Sugar Butter Flour Shawl is worked top down in one piece to create a perfectly symmetrical triangle that is wide and shallow. The body is all solid stitches - it starts with color A, fades to color B, has a section of color B, and then fades to color C. The edging features detailed cables with a little bit of lace between each cable.
