Nancy Chandler's Map of Khao San and Phra Athit

Busy day and night, Bangkok's backpacker haven of Khao San and Phra Athit has shed its down-and-dirty image, evolving into a bustling market and nightlife destination with many new options for dining, drinking, dancing, and dreaming.

Nancy Chandler's map is designed to help you discover the gems behind the clothing and street food stalls, the henna and tattoo parlors, the fast food outlets, and the massage shops that line the streets in the area. Included on the PDF version of the Khao San and Phra Athit map are the following:

  • hotel and hostel recommendations
  • sightseeing attractions including special things to do (vegetarian and vegan cooking classes, walking tours, boxing classes, comedy nights, and more)
  • special shops (guiding you to better buys than the touristy souvenirs sold on the streets)
  • great brunch and vegetarian cafes, plus listings covering dining options throughout the area (from pad thai stalls to fine riverside dining)
  • craft beer, cocktail and wine bars
  • rooftop bars, dance clubs and live music venues
  • tips on getting around, especially useful during rush hours

American artist Nancy Chandler moved to Thailand in 1969 and published the first edition of her detailed map of Bangkok in 1974 as an illustration for the American Women's Club magazine. It proved so popular with not just members but the greater expatriate community as well that Nancy was soon pressured into publishing it independently.

Her map of Chiang Mai followed in 1980, when the magazine sent Nancy north to illustrate a story on the city shortly after she had been captivated by it on a holiday with her young children. Her keen sense of adventure and humor eventually resulted in an extensive range of greeting cards and gifts, each of which celebrates and enhances the experience of Thailand and all things Thai.

Nancy passed away in her home town of Mill Valley, California, in 2015, but her eldest daughter and business partner Nima carries on the business.
