A RAMS you're not embarrassed to hand a client.

Free RAMS generators give you a form with your trade dropped into it. Principal contractors and clients bounce those back for being generic - and they're right to, because a RAMS that isn't specific to the site isn't worth much. So you end up writing one from a blank page at 9pm the night before you start, or sending the last job's with the name changed.

This is the layout that gets used on real sites. You fill in the specifics for the job in front of you; the structure is already right.

WHAT'S IN IT - 3 PAGES, 12 SECTIONS

  1. Document control - RAMS reference, revision, review date, project, activity, contractor
  2. Description and scope of work
  3. Persons who could be affected - your operatives, other trades, site staff, visitors, the public, neighbours, children and vulnerable people
  4. Risk assessment - hazard, who's harmed, and the risk scored TWICE: once before controls and once after, using a 1-5 likelihood x severity scale with the rating bands printed on the page
  5. Method statement - a numbered, step-by-step sequence of how the work will actually be carried out safely, from set-up to clean-up
  6. Plant, equipment and access
  7. PPE required - tick list including face-fit validity and fall arrest
  8. Hazardous substances (COSHH) - substance, hazard, control
  9. Emergency arrangements - nearest A&E, first aider and kit location, fire and assembly point, spill and incident actions
  10. Competence, permits and supervision - plus permit tick list: hot works, confined space, work at height, electrical isolation, asbestos check, excavation, lifting
  11. Site-specific notes and additional hazards
  12. Author sign-off, and a briefing record with 14 signature rows - so everyone carrying out the work signs to say they've read it before they start

FAQ

Aren't there free RAMS generators?

Yes - and if a generator's output is accepted by your client, use it. This exists because generators are built to be generic so they cover everyone, which is exactly why some principal contractors send them back. You're paying for the structure, not for software.

Is it a fillable PDF?

No - it's print-and-fill. Print it and complete it by hand on site, or retype the structure into your own document. That's deliberate: a RAMS gets marked up, signed and kept in the site file.

Can I put my own logo on it?

Yes. Every page has [YOUR COMPANY NAME] and [YOUR LOGO] marked.

Can I use it on more than one job?

Yes - unlimited jobs, forever. It should be completed fresh for each site and task.

Please note: this is a generic, adaptable template - not a completed risk assessment and not safety advice. It must be filled in for your specific task and site by a competent person, and reviewed if anything changes. It supports, but does not replace, your duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act and CDM 2015.
