- Notes from the Artist: Egrets and herons are among the most elegant and graceful of nature’s birds. To me, they symbolize stillness and tranquility, yet they are supreme hunters, spearing fish with lightning-quick moves. Photographing them requires me to become like them, showing great patience and lightning-quick reflexes. This particular Great Blue Heron caught my eye with its regal stance. It immediately reminded me of a Swiss Guard standing at attention at his post, in all of his pageantry.
