Engla Shawl (crochet pattern)

It’s all about the yarn…and a little texture.

I designed this shawl pattern to feature the bold hand-dyed yarns created by Oink Pigments. It showcases Targhee Pigtails (mini skeins) coordinated with Oink Pigments Targhee Sock (full-size skein). Interesting side note: the Targhee breed of sheep was developed in the early 20th century in the western ranges of the USA (including Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota). They are named after the National Forest where the animals grazed during the summer.

In addition to featuring the colorful yarn, solid and openwork areas give textural interest to the piece. The solid area of the shawl is bold blocks of color (featuring four of the mini skeins) separated by speckled and contrasting color stripes (the full-size main color skein and the contrasting color mini skein). An openwork area along the long lower edge is created by wrapping the last row of each section around the previously completed rows.

The shawl works up quickly using only three types of stitches: double crochet, chain stitch, and reverse single crochet.

It is a relaxing project that is well suited to watching TV and movies or having a conversation with family and friends.
