What does a Christian life look like if its rule is taken not from Aristotle but from Scripture itself?
Johannes Crell (1590–1633), rector of the Academy of Raków and one of the systematic minds of the Polish Brethren, wrote two ethics. In the Ethica Aristotelica he corrected Aristotle by the standard of Holy Scripture; in the Ethica Christiana he builds the doctrine of virtue from Scripture alone. Where the Protestant school ethics of his century looked for biblical proofs to go with Aristotle, Crell turns the order round – and takes the Sermon on the Mount not as an unattainable ideal but as standing law.
The work comprises five books: what a virtue and a vice are, and how Scripture describes the passage from the one to the other; the virtues of the understanding – knowledge, prudence, faith and hope; the virtues of the will in general; piety and the duties towards God; the duties towards our neighbour and ourselves; and finally the duties of particular persons – teachers and hearers, elders and deacons, the several ages, spouses, parents and children, masters and servants, magistrates and subjects, the rich and the poor. Crell argues soberly and closely from the text and invites every listener to examine for themselves – true to the apostle’s word: “Test everything; hold fast to what is good.”
