Faustus Socinus – On Jesus Christ the Saviour

Socinus’s Polemic Against the Doctrine of Satisfaction

Translated from the Latin by Marcin Poholski

Is Jesus Christ our Saviour because he satisfied divine justice through his death – or because he showed us the way to eternal life, confirmed it by his life and resurrection, and will himself give it to us?

In 1577 Faustus Socinus (1539–1604) of Siena met the Parisian preacher Jacobus Covetus in Basel. Over supper a dispute arose about the satisfaction of Christ; Covet promised to refute Socinus’s view in writing, and in 1578 Socinus answered him point by point. This exchange became De Jesu Christo Servatore, printed in Poland in 1594: Socinus’s principal work and one of the most thorough examinations of the doctrine of vicarious satisfaction from the Reformation era.

Part One refutes Covet’s scriptural proofs; Part Two shows that Scripture speaks of redemption, ransom and sacrifice in figurative language; Part Three sets out why a satisfaction was neither necessary nor possible; Part Four treats justifying faith and the imputation of Christ’s righteousness. Socinus argues from Scripture and reason, not polemic – and invites every listener to examine the evidence for themselves.

This audiobook contains the complete English translation with preface, both prefaces of the first edition and afterword, in 59 chapters; Covet’s objections are read in full, Bible references are spoken out.
