Faustus Socinus – On Justification

Socinus’s View on the Justification of the Sinner

Audiobook · unabridged · 4 hrs 39 min · 8 chapters · English

Translated from the Latin by Marcin Poholski

How does sinful man become righteous before God – through an alien righteousness imputed to him, or through a faith that trusts God and obeys him?

No question stirred the sixteenth century like this one. Luther’s sola fide, Calvin’s teaching and the Council of Trent gave their answers; Faustus Socinus (1539–1604) of Siena gave one of the most radical. He rejects the doctrine of satisfaction in all its forms: Christ’s death is not a vicarious punishment but the seal of God’s will to forgive. Righteous before God is the one who repents, trusts in Christ and keeps his commandments.

De Iustificatione gathers Socinus’s writings on justification: two summaries of our justification through Christ, theses, the Dialogue between John and Christopher, Socinus’s critical notes on that dialogue, fragments, an Italian letter on faith and works, and finally theses on the cause and ground of faith. Socinus argues from Scripture and reason and so invites every listener to examine for themselves – true to the apostle’s word: “Test everything; hold fast to what is good.”

This audiobook contains the complete English translation with preface and afterword; Bible references are spoken out.
