Who is the one God of whom Scripture speaks? Johannes Crell (1590–1633), teacher and rector of the Academy of Raków and preacher to the congregation of the Polish Brethren, is regarded as the most acute systematic mind of Socinianism after Fausto Sozzini. His treatise De uno Deo Patre appeared in 1631 and was soon translated into Dutch and English; at the same time it was among the most fiercely contested books of its century.
Crell sets out to show that the supreme God is one not only in essence but also in person: the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. The First Book conducts the proof from Scripture – first directly, from the passages that speak expressly of the Father (John 17:3, 1 Corinthians 8:6, Ephesians 4:6 and many more), then indirectly, by showing chapter by chapter that neither Christ nor the holy spirit is that supreme God. The Second Book examines the doctrine of three persons in one divine essence by means of reason and of the scholastic philosophy with which Crell’s opponents defended it, and closes with a reflection on the usefulness of this whole inquiry for piety and life.
Crell argues not with polemic but with reasons that can answer for themselves before Scripture and before reason alike.
This audiobook contains the complete English translation of both books with preface, Crell’s preface to the Christian reader and afterword, divided into 131 chapter marks; Bible references are spoken out, Greek words are read in transliteration.
