Faustus Socinus – Theological Lectures

On Predestination, Free Will and Justification

Audiobook · unabridged · 11 hrs 3 min · 29 chapters · English

Translated from the Latin by Marcin Poholski

Can God know what a free human being will do tomorrow?

Faustus Socinus (1539–1604) answers: no – and at the same time insists that God is omniscient. To be omniscient means to know everything that can be known; but an act that still lies freely open is nothing that can be known. From here, in twenty-nine concise chapters, he puts original sin, predestination and the bondage of the will to the test, and shows why forgiveness out of grace and full payment of the debt exclude one another.

The Praelectiones Theologicae were published in 1609 from Socinus’s papers by Valentin Schmalz and dedicated, as a challenge, to the University of Heidelberg. The first half deals with man: Adam was mortal even before the fall, there is no inherited guilt, the will is free. The second half deals with justification: God could and would forgive without satisfaction, and not even the sacrifices of the old covenant allow Christ’s death to be read as a payment for sins. Socinus argues from Scripture and reason and so invites every listener to examine for themselves.
