Faith Toward God
In Faith Toward God, Michael E.B. Maher presents the second of the six foundational doctrines of Christ. He explains that every believer receives the same measure of faith as a gift from God—indeed, the faith of Jesus Himself. Thus, lack of faith is not the problem; rather, the issue is hardened hearts and lack of understanding, which prevent believers from exercising the faith they already possess.
Maher emphasizes that faith must be placed in God’s power, not in human wisdom. Believers grow in faith by renewing their minds through meditation on God’s Word, becoming fully convinced of His promises, and confessing those promises aloud. Faith requires corresponding action, patience, and hope. In prayer, believers must ask according to God’s revealed will, believing they have already received.
The book distinguishes between general faith (given to all) and the spiritual gift of special faith (manifested as the Holy Spirit wills). Hindrances to faith include doubt, unbelief, and not walking in love. Maher concludes that the just shall live by faith, and without faith it is impossible to please God. The book includes practical examples from Scripture and the author’s life.
