"The Paine Protocol has everything audiences love: intrigue, heart, & a powerful emotional core. This has all the elements of a major motion picture."

-- Ron Hall, NY Times Bestselling Author, Same Kind of Different as Me (& Paramount Pictures)

This isn't just a political thriller.

It's based on a true family story, a cold case, and a reckoning with what gets buried and refuses to stay hidden.

Nearly 60 years after their father's death, Mark, Rachel, and Rob stumble onto a mysterious cassette tape, a hidden field notebook, and the first thread in a web of lies stretching from Vietnam to Texas, from Pentagon backrooms to rural Pennsylvania genetic test zones.

Some lessons are not just taught. They're carried.

About the author

Mark Paine Fisher was five years old when his father, Captain Robert T. Paine, was killed in a 1966 plane crash. He has spent the better part of sixty years asking what really happened - both out-loud and in his imagination. He is the grandson of Western novelist Lauran Paine, whose work Kevin Costner adapted into the 2003 film Open Range. The Paine Protocol is Mark's first spy-novel.

This story is for you if:

  • You love political and historical thrillers
  • Cold War intrigue
  • You're drawn to aviation mysteries and real family history
  • You are carrying grief, loss, or unanswered questions of your own
  • You believe some truths are worth the cost of finding them

If you're carrying something heavy right now, the absence of someone who mattered, the silence where a voice used to be, Mark Paine Fisher's world will feel familiar.

You'll recognize the ache in these pages.

And somewhere inside this story, you might find something that feels a little like company.

3.3 New and Improved!

The additions are fabulous! I felt like I was able to experience the story from the perspective of each person profoundly impacted by these events. It drew me in even more, with layers of texture and nuance that let me know the 'characters' not just by their roles in chasing the mystery, but by their relationships with their dad and with one another.

Lisa, this means so much to hear! That was exactly my goal with the new additions: to bring each person to life so readers could really know them, not just as characters but as real people with their own relationships and depth. The fact that it drew you in even more tells me we’re on the right track. Thank you for reading both versions and taking the time to share this. More to come!

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would love to see a full-length novel or screenplay. It was exciting and kept my attention the whole time. I would also love to hear more about the true story behind the novella. It left me wanting more...

A FUN Pageturner

I've known Mark P for decades and have heard tidbits of the story of his dad as they have been discovered and revealed over a lifetime. It has always seemed a story worth telling, if only enough pieces could be found to see the picture.

I loved reading this novella! I could not put it down; I bought it and read it in one sitting as soon as it downloaded. It's a complex tale to tell in such a short form, but Mark P has captured the emotion and character of his dad, impossible and dangerous decisions to be made, subterfuge by people who should be allies and protectors, and an intricate story that is suspenseful in the most realistic way. I loved reading how his siblings work together to unravel the mysteries, each using their gifts, propelled by their desire to know their dad and the circumstances that took him from them at such tender ages. It was cool to see their relationships grow in their shared quest for the truth.

If this is a glimpse of how Mark P, a storyteller at heart, can weave a tale, then I want more. The story deserves a full-length novel to put even more flesh on these very sturdy bones. I wanted to know more. About the people, Mark P's mom, the relationships, the influences that shaped his dad to be the man that he was, whether accountability was or will be seen, and...will there be a movie!

Highly recommend for an hour or two of enjoyable reading and a fuller understanding of why it's not 'just' Mark, but always Mark P.
