Triafamone Patent Landscape Analysis

Developed by Bayer for rice weed management and commercialised through products including Council Prime® and Council Complete®, triafamone is a selective sulfonanilide ALS-inhibiting herbicide. The updated landscape retains 108 patent families across 42 consolidated owner groups. Bayer’s originator estate holds 30 families across four of the five substantive protection layers, while extensive filings from Chinese agrochemical companies demonstrate strong commercial interest in alternative formulations and mixture products.

Herbicide combinations form the largest layer, with 81 families distributed among 35 holder groups. Thirty-eight partner active ingredients are specifically identified in claims, with another 30 families claiming combinations in open terms. Eighteen families address formulation and spray delivery, while four protect the compound genus or manufacturing process. Sixty-two families have a granted-active or national-pending reading, and eight live families reach their nominal term within five years.
