This resource is perfect for students who are learning more about how to evaluate the passages they are reading and are learning how to identify the purpose within a passage. This resource contains an explainer that goes into detail on five different purposes for writing a passage - to persuade, to inform, to describe, to entertain, and to explain – in addition to examples of the types of passages that contain each type of writing and things to look for in the author’s diction and otherwise to determine the purpose of the passage.

The worksheet included has 20 examples asking students to provide the purpose of the type of passage described as well as their reason for making that choice. An answer key is included as well.
