The Velvet Cage sits beneath a nondescript brick building on Detroit's east side, no sign, no marquee, just a matte black door with a brass knocker shaped like a coiled serpent. Inside, it's a different world. Low ceilings, exposed ductwork painted black, walls lined with burgundy velvet and soundproofing foam. The air is thick, warm leather, sandalwood candles, and something faintly metallic. Bass pulses through the floor from the lounge upstairs, muffled and distant, like a heartbeat buried under concrete.

Down here, in the private playrooms, the only sounds that matter are the ones you make.
