Why the Word "Christian" Was Never Ours to Carry

Jesus never called his followers Christians.

Not once. Not in any Gospel. Not in a sermon, a prayer, or his final words before he left. Go looking for the moment he says "this is what I want you to be called" — that moment doesn't exist.

So where did the word come from?

Rome made it up.

It was a government label, slapped on a movement Roman officials needed to track — the same way they tagged Herod's people and Caesar's people. Within three centuries, the empire that once executed people for carrying that name made it the official name of the empire itself. And once that happened, the word never stopped working for power.

It justified the conquest of two continents. It put the Bible behind the enslavement of millions of human beings — in writing, by name, from pulpits, in the founding documents of one of America's largest denominations. It built the theology behind Manifest Destiny. And right now, today, it's the word a growing political movement is using to build a government with one religion in charge of everyone inside its borders.

This isn't speculation. Every quote in this book is checked against the original document. Roman court records. Papal decrees. Slaveholders' own sermons. A Confederate vice president's own speech. The actual letters of the actual men who built every layer of this.

The man who washed feet and died between two criminals never asked for any of it.
