God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Arranged by Will Scott
Edited by Mathew House
About
The origins of this Carol are unknown but the plainchant modal melody gives an indication that it originates as early as the 15th century. This arrangement takes the structure of a theme and variations, deploying the different textures of a big band, full of the articulation I learnt through many years working with jazz bands. The first section starts very freely, with the unsettled tempo moving into a swing section. The new feel introduces short chords under an improvised theme, in the style of Freddie Green from the Count Basie Orchestra. After the introduction, the tempo picks up into double time, moving into a bass solo.
