Is it a sock? Is it fingerless mitts? Until you get to the heel turn, it can be either. A tube is a tube is a tube until you put a thumb gusset or heel in it, right?

Fingerless mitts and socks have so much in common. Have you ever noticed that the cuff of most socks fits your forearm like a glove? A standard 56/64/72-stitch cast-on often works as well for a wrist as it does for an ankle. Add a little ribbing to help with the fit, drop in a thumb, and BAM! Fingerless mitts.
