Mondrian Mitts

Following in the footsteps of two creative visionaries - Dutch painter Piet Mondrian and French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent - Mondrian Mitts turn iconic abstract art into a bold, wearable accessory.

This design draws on Mondrian’s striking compositions in red, blue, and yellow from the 1920s and ’30s, and echoes the clean geometry of YSL’s 1965 Mondrian dress collection.

A spin-off of the Partners In Colour Mitts, this version adds on a bold intarsia grid to the sleek sideways construction of the original pattern.

Make your mitts in the classic Mondrian palette - red, blue, yellow, white, and black - or choose five colours of your own. There is also a three-colour option for a simpler, more minimalist look. This is a great project for leftovers or sock yarn sets.

Whether you’re exploring intarsia for the first time or looking for a new canvas for colour play, these mitts are a joyful fusion of art and craft.

SIZES

Sizes S (M, L) to fit hand circumferences of

7-7.7 (7.7-8.3, 8.3-9) in / 18-19.5 (19.5-21, 21-23) cm

Size S fits an average female hand, Size M fits a large female or medium male hand, and Size L fits a large male hand.

SKILL LEVEL

This project is a relatively quick knit, thanks to the simplicity of garter stitch and straightforward mitt construction. However, the addition of intarsia introduces a layer of challenge and sophistication.

Recommended for experienced knitters.

• blunt tapestry needle

YARN AND YARDAGE

Fingering weight yarn, 436 yds (400m) / 100g in five or three colours.

The shown sample was knit with BBB Baby Alpaca Mix (60% Alpaca, 40% Acrylic).

Total yardage for 2 mitts: 175 (198, 220) yds / 160 (180, 200) m) / 40 (45, 50) g

Waste yarn: approximately 8.7 yds (8m) / 2g of fingering yarn for two mitts.

30 sts x 32 ridges (64 rows) in 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch
