Short Guide: Heritage Walk The Hepworth Wakefield to Sandal Castle

This self-guided walk takes you through an area where medieval history and modern culture sit side by side. It begins at The Hepworth Wakefield, the celebrated contemporary art gallery on the riverfront. The route leads you over the ancient Wakefield Bridge to the Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin, one of only four surviving bridge chapels in England.

From there, you’ll follow in the footsteps of soldiers and nobles as you make your way toward Sandal Castle, the ruins of a 12th-century stronghold that witnessed one of the key turning points in the Wars of the Roses.
