Additional context for the piece:
In ‘ycnednepedoc’ I wanted to create a piece that conveys how intimacy can be marred by co-dependency, which is excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a partner. The aspect of co-dependency I wanted to focus on in the work is that of unclear boundaries of self and the feeling of being incomplete without the presence of a partner in your life. In the foreground of the piece is a couple tightly embracing, and the background consists of disjointed close-ups of their limbs. The couple have matching tattoos, which read “you complete me” written in reverse. Although there is no distance between the couple, as they are as close to each other as they can be, and they are holding each other tightly, there is still a disconnect between them. A disconnect I wanted to convey through the tilts of their heads. They aren’t directly facing each other, and their faces are tilted away from one another. At the root of this disconnect is the fact that there is an apprehension about their intimacy; a fear that separation is not only a threat to their individual sense/s of self, but also always imminent.
