Additional context for the piece:

One of the byproducts of living in a world order defined by imperialist values and systems is that we are conditioned to believe that our survival is contingent on dominance. The premise of systems like capitalism is that there is a scarcity of resources in the world, and it is thus necessary to compete in order to survive. When we are repeatedly taught and shown that we need to have dominion over others in order to be empowered, this shapes how we navigate our intimate relationships with one another. In ‘control&coercion’ I wanted to convey this idea by illustrating a large puppet figure, pulling the strings of a smaller puppet figure while taunting them with a pair of cherries. The idea behind this piece is that there is a skewed power dynamic at play between these puppet figures – which are a couple – that is heavily informed and enforced by a system larger than them both. In the absence of liberation, it is important to examine how we are conditioned to understand power in relation to our survival. It is important to become introspective about what our values about control and coercion are. To investigate how we navigate getting our needs met, how we engage marginality (our own and that of our loved ones) and to continually unlearn the ways we internalize and recreate the system in our intimate lives.
