Additional context for the piece:

Marginalization often entails having limited access to safety. Limited access to places where you can be your whole self without persecution, ostracization, or threats of and actual violence. This necessitates the cultivation of spaces specifically created to offer safety, solidarity, and community. A lot of these spaces dub themselves or are deemed ‘safe spaces’. Spaces that are exclusive or explicitly welcoming to people marginalized through race, gender, sexuality, disability and/or class. Spaces that promise a reprieve from the isolation and hardship that is often resultant from marginalization. In ‘pour out libations’ I have created a work that conveys the complicated experience of being in a safe space and encountering predation. In it, the lone figure can be seen dancing and holding up alcoholic beverages, one of which contains the branding of the safe space they are in. A space that is specifically geared toward cultivating safety for queer people. The work also includes twisted hands reaching for the dancing figure in an ominous way. The hands represent members of our community whose choices and actions pose a threat to the people they are in proximity to.
