James Tissot, proper name Jacques-Joseph Tissot, (1836, Nantes - 1902, Chance-Buffon), was a French artist who lived and worked in England for a long time.

James (Jacques-Joseph) was born in October 1836 in Nantes. He studied at the School of Fine Arts by profession. His teachers were Ingri Flandren. The artist's first works, for the most part, were dedicated to beautiful women. There was a whole series of paintings called "La Femme a Paris". And then the artist became one of the participants in the Franco-Prussian war. And he was suspected of sympathizing with the communards. The artist was forced to leave Paris and settle in London. In 1870, a landmark event occurred in the artist's life – he met Kathleen Newton.

The young lady managed to be married before meeting James. They lived together for 12 years and Kathleen became his muse, model, beloved. But happiness is not eternal. In 1882, a young woman committed suicide (she suffered greatly from tuberculosis). She was only 28 years old.

Tissot returned to Paris and then left for Palestine. It was in Palestine that the artist created more than seven hundred watercolors about the life of Jesus Christ. Some of the works were exhibited in Paris, and then in London. More than 350 works were bought by the Parisian company Lemercier for 1,100,000 francs.

The artist continued to work on subjects about the Old Testament and Christ until his death in 1902.
