The University of Valladolid traces to around 1241, the third-oldest university in Spain. This Companion reads a city that served for extended periods as Spain's own royal capital, and tells the story of a formal debate held here in 1550 that asked, for the first time in European history, whether an entire empire's conquest could actually be called just.
