The Leiden University Companion

William of Orange founded a university in Leiden in 1575, a genuine reward for the city's resistance during a Spanish siege. This Companion reads the university's motto, "bastion of freedom," through the only walking conversation Freud ever had with Mahler, and tells the story of a professor's own act of courage the institution still commemorates every November, at real personal cost.
