Afidopyropen Patent Landscape Analysis

Jointly discovered by the Kitasato Institute and Meiji Seika Pharma from naturally derived pyripyropene chemistry, afidopyropen was subsequently developed by BASF under the Inscalis® brand. Its distinct mode of action and strong activity against aphids, whiteflies, scale insects and populations resistant to established insecticides make it an important addition to sucking-pest and resistance-management programmes. The report retains 137 patent families. Pesticide combinations dominate, comprising 114 families, with seven single-active formulation families and ten upstream families across compound and process and manufacturing. Expiry of the seven substance-layer families does not clear these downstream layers.

A total of 66 families have a grant or national pending reading, while four live families reach their nominal term within five years—highlighting both the continuing density of protection and the approaching opportunities created by portfolio expiry.
