We Three Kings
Arranged by Will Scott
Edited by Mathew House
About:
Originally titled Three Kings of Orient, We Three Kings was composed by American clergyman John Hopkins. It was written in 1857 for his church's Christmas pageant and continues to be a popular carol in children’s nativity performances. Usually characterised as a slow march, while the Three Kings make their way towards the star, this arrangement syncopates the feel by diminishing the melody into a 5/4 time signature. The motivation for this arrangement came from playing a version of We Three Kings with my school jazz band at the annual carol concert. I took inspiration from Dave Brubeck’s famous ‘Take Five’, giving the arrangement a time signature in ‘5’ and a very distinctive chord progression in the solo section
