These are challenging times for healthcare organizations and health systems the
world over. While the first edition of this book was published at the crest of a
sustained international economic boom, this second edition emerges just after a worldwide
economic crisis which resulted in a recession in almost all developed countries,
from which most are only slowly emerging. The economic recovery has been faltering
and fragile, and some countries have such difficult economic problems that it may be
years before the good times return.
