Heavy Thunder and Lightning Sound Effects Library ORTF 3D
If you have been curious about immersive ORTF 3D field recordings but mostly came across very expensive libraries, we hope this collection gives you a chance to explore the format without spending hundreds of dollars just to get started.
This PayHip version includes the original untouched 8-channel ORTF 3D WAV recordings exactly as they were recorded in the field, making it ideal for sound designers, immersive audio enthusiasts, Atmos workflows, and everyone who prefers working with native multichannel recordings.
While waiting for our ferry to Tasmania, we stayed in a small Airbnb in Geelong, Australia, and one evening the weather suddenly changed completely. Dark clouds slowly rolled across the neighborhood while distant thunder started building in the background followed by some incredibly powerful lightning strikes.
For these recordings I positioned the Schoeps ORTF 3D setup under a small garden roof with all sides open. Leaving the microphones fully exposed during the lightning honestly felt a little too risky, but the location ended up creating a really beautiful perspective for the storm. You can hear the thunder naturally rolling through the neighborhood while wind moves through trees and bushes surrounding the house. Occasionally even the neighbor’s dog joins the recordings in the distance.
What I personally love about these recordings is that they do not sound like a completely isolated wilderness storm. Instead they feel grounded inside a real residential environment while still remaining calm and spacious without overwhelming city noise.
