House and Sea, Original Embroidery
One of six embroidered stories in a series called The Land Is Changing.
"House and Sea", 2020/21.
Hand stitched using applique and sashiko methods, with the tiny scraps of fabric that are usually only good for stuffing (or the bin), waste bits of embroidery thread, on a backing of unwanted table linens, rescued from a hotel laundry on the Isle of Skye.
Through these textile stories, I wanted to connect into a sense of place, of home, of the land that sustains us. The land that we used to live in harmony with. I wanted to explore how our relationship with this land has become fragmented, and weave a space for conversation about how we can stitch back together the damage we have done, and heal.
These works were exhibited in Whitley Bay, North East Coast, UK in the Summer of 2021
