Kapow! Rhythm Card Game - Level 1 & 2

A hilarious way to work on rhythm!  Our Kapow! Rhythm Game can be used to test your wits with rapid-fire reveals or be used as a cumulative rhythm game.

In our studio, the favourite way to play is to turn all your cards face-down and choose one at random.  Each card gets added on to an ever-lengthening rhythm worm which the player has to play, tap or say to complete their turn.  If you pull a Kapow! card, you win ALL the cards from that round, and the worm starts over.  The player with the most cards at the end wins!

We use rhythm pads, drumsticks (and rubber duckies for rests!) to ramp up the fun, but the game can also be played with just the cards.  You can see our prototype version in the photos below; the download is the updated version which includes a sheet of card backs, eight different rhythm sheets and the full set of kapow! cards.  Each rhythm appears in its symbolized form and in Kodály syllables.

Level One includes rhythms that exist within the beat unit and so are easier for young kids to feel and process - sixteenth, eighth & quarter notes and quarter rests (semiquavers, quavers, crotchets and crotchet rests).  Rhythms are colour-coded to assist in recognition for even your smallest musicians!

Level Two includes rhythms that exist within the beat unit and in full-beat counts, so are easier for young kids to feel and process - sixteenth & eighths, eighth-note triplets, half, dotted half and whole notes and rests (semiquaver & quaver combinations, triplet quavers, minims, dotted minims, semibreves notes and rests).  Rhythms are colour-coded to assist in recognition for even your smallest musicians!

Use each deck alone or mix & match!
