Ambarine

The Ambarine wrap was inspired by the waving lines of California’s fields and hills, which inevitably draw the eye every summer as the grasses turn their distinctive golden color. The lines of overlapping hills that stretch across the landscape are replicated in Ambarine’s offset groups of ridges and eyelets. The looser gauge at which it is knit and its lacy design make it the perfect lightweight wrap for a summer outing. The silk and merino blend of Invictus Yarns’ Poetry give it a distinctive softness, sheen, and drape, while the colorway, Dubloon, beautifully replicates the shades of California’s golden hills.

Construction: Ambarine is constructed modularly as a series of triangles that build upon one another. Growing from a simple single-stitch cast on, Ambarine takes the knitter through a series of unexpected directional changes that are pleasantly clever without being unmanageably difficult. Sections of stockinette are offset by garter ridges framing rows of simple eyelets. The distinctive variation in the direction of the ridges and rows is created by picking up and knitting outward from the sides of each previous section; changing the direction of the knitting with each new triangle, and increasing and decreasing to shape the piece. Ambarine is finished with a 3-stitch garter edge, knit on after all the sections are worked.

Yarn: 900 yards (825 meters) of fingering-weight or sock yarn in a wool, wool-silk, or wool-bamboo blend. The wool content helps the wrap hold its shape after blocking, while silk or bamboo content give the shawl a lovely drape.

Suggested yarns include Poetry by Invictus Yarn Company (50% superwash merino, 50% silk, fingering weight, 435 yd /  per 100 g skein), 2 skeins (shown in sample in Dubloon); Provenance Sock by Louisiana Yarn Guys, 50% silk, 50% superwash merino, 438 yds/100g skein, 2 skeins; Heritage Silk by Cascade Yarns (85% superwash merino, 15% silk, fingering weight, 437 yd /  per 100 g skein), 2 skeins; Stroll Tonal by KnitPicks (75% fine superwash merino, 25% nylon, fingering weight; 462 yd /  per 100 g skein), 2 skeins.
