The Maybeck Shawl was inspired by the cool waters and pink Greek columns that frame the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District of San Francisco. Bernard Maybeck, the architect who designed the original structure for the World’s Fair in 1915, was a famous proponent of the Arts and Crafts Movement in architecture and was one of Julia Morgan’s mentors. With the Maybeck Shawl draped over the shoulders, one can’t help but feel transported to ancient Greece, strolling along the peaceful waters of the lagoon and admiring the statues and arches that decorate the daunting columns.

Beginning with a few sts at one point, the Maybeck Shawl grows in width as increases are worked once every other row. Contrasting cool colors create simple garter lines that merge with a bright mesh lace pattern. These lines are repeated in a mirrored pattern throughout the shawl, resembling the columns of the Palace of Fine arts.
