AP World History: Modern Units 1–3 Bundle | Global Tapestry, Networks & Empires

Teach the first three units of AP World History: Modern with a comprehensive, classroom-ready bundle designed to build historical knowledge, strengthen historical thinking skills, and prepare students for AP-style writing and analysis.

This AP World History Units 1–3 Bundle covers the major developments of the course from c. 1200–1750, taking students from the regional societies and belief systems of the Global Tapestry through expanding networks of exchange and the rise of powerful land-based empires.

Three Complete AP World History Units Included

Unit 1: The Global Tapestry, c. 1200–1450

Students explore major states, belief systems, political structures, cultural traditions, and patterns of development across regions including East Asia, South and Southeast Asia, the Islamic world, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

Unit 2: Networks of Exchange, c. 1200–1450

Students investigate the expansion of the Silk Roads, Indian Ocean trade, Trans-Saharan trade, the Mongol Empire, cultural and technological diffusion, and the economic and environmental effects of increasingly connected trade networks.

Unit 3: Land-Based Empires, c. 1450–1750

Students examine the expansion and consolidation of the Ottoman, Safavid, Mughal, Ming, Qing, and Russian Empires, including gunpowder technology, bureaucracy, religion, political authority, cultural traditions, and methods rulers used to govern diverse populations.

Across Unit 3, for example, students work with historical background readings organized around comparison, causation, and continuity and change over time (CCOT) and examine how military technology and government institutions contributed to the development of land-based empires.

Designed for AP World History Skill Development

Throughout the bundle, students engage with activities designed to move beyond memorization and toward the historical reasoning required in an AP World History: Modern classroom.

Resources incorporate:

  • Historical background readings
  • Essential AP World History vocabulary
  • Primary source analysis
  • Historical evidence and critical-thinking activities
  • Comparison, causation, and CCOT practice
  • Chronology and timeline activities
  • Short Answer Question (SAQ) practice
  • Long Essay Question (LEQ) practice
  • AP-style historical reasoning
  • Answer keys and teacher support

The materials give students opportunities to practice working with specific historical evidence and constructing AP-style responses. Unit 3, for example, includes SAQ practice on gunpowder technology, political institutions, Ottoman and Mughal governance, and Ming-to-Qing continuity.

Students also encounter LEQ-style prompts requiring a historically defensible thesis, contextualization, specific evidence, and historical reasoning—the same core skills they need as they progress toward the AP World History exam.

Flexible for Your Classroom

Use these resources for whole-class instruction, independent practice, small-group work, homework, review, intervention, enrichment, or AP exam preparation. Teachers can follow the units sequentially or select individual readings and activities to supplement an existing AP World History curriculum.

This bundle is especially useful for teachers looking for substantial, print-ready resources that combine content knowledge with AP historical thinking and writing practice rather than relying on simple worksheets or recall questions.

Save by purchasing Units 1–3 together instead of purchasing each unit separately.
