Protest Mittens (F-Ice)
Instead of buying the pattern, donate the amount you would be willing to spend on a pattern to a charity of your choice. MN Aide Link
I live in the twin cities in Minnesota, and since the beginning of 2026, there has a been a large ICE presence. The escalation of their tactics and not respecting human or constitutional rights does not sit well with me. Please put your rage and emotions into your mittens and use them for some “good trouble”. Learn about the creation of the mittens here.
There are extra charts and make your own charts included!
Tips:
- I do not recommend highly speckled yarn because it makes the pattern difficult to see.
- I used 8” circulars which I knit looser on than DPNs, so if using DPNs, you might go up a needle size. BE SURE TO MATCH THE GUAGE.
- If you want a U instead of a star in the palm, there is a chart for it.
Size: One Size - The mitten is approximately 9 inches long, 7.5-8 inches around, but may differ depending on your gauge to make them bigger or smaller.
Yarn Weight: Worsted weight/DK - Malabrigo Rios in the pictures
These mittens are made with worsted because I like thick mittens, but they can easily be used with DK or fingering held together. I used Malabrigo Rios but Arroyo or Cascade 220 Superwash would work just as well, especially if you are a tight knitter.
If you are making small, kid mittens, sport or fingering will make them smaller, but you will need to find that gauge.
Gauge: 10 sts x 17 rows for a 4” square (5cm) with US 4 in stranded stitches – these will be the larger needles
Needle Size: US 2 - 2.75mm & US 4 - 3.5mm (8" Circular, DPNS, or chosen method)
Yarn Amount Needed:
MC of worsted or DK yarn, 53g/102m (112yd)
CC of worsted or DK yarn, 35-40g/70-80m (77-87yd)
