Civil Rights: The Fire Next Time is an intense, choice-driven historical simulation that places students inside the moral, physical, and political struggles of the Civil Rights Movement from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s. Rather than learning about the movement from a distance, students must decide how to act inside it.

Players step into the role of a young activist and choose between historically grounded paths including nonviolent direct action with SNCC in Birmingham, armed self-defense with the Black Panthers in Oakland, voter registration work during Freedom Summer in Mississippi, or serving as a white ally and educator during school desegregation in Little Rock. Each path presents authentic dilemmas rooted in real events, leaders, and strategies, with consequences that reflect the realities of the era.

The game blends powerful narrative writing with original arcade-style mini-games that simulate real historical pressures: dodging police dogs and fire hoses, feeding children under surveillance, fleeing night riders on Mississippi roads, and physically protecting students from mob violence. Success is never guaranteed, and failure often teaches as much as survival.

An integrated archival database allows students to search key people, events, and vocabulary in real time, reinforcing content knowledge without breaking immersion. Civil Rights: The Fire Next Time does not simplify the movement into heroes and villains. It shows students how strategy, discipline, fear, and sacrifice shaped history.

You will receive a game guide with a teacher's guide, a student worksheet, and a direct link to the online game for sharing with your students. If you are a teacher and are worried about the game being blocked by your school's server, contact us; there are two easy ways to make the game available besides the direct link.
