#36 : A-Maze-ing Fools | An April Fools Day D&D 5e One-Shot Adventure for 2–3 Players
Your players will spend half this adventure playing each other's characters.
They won't see it coming. That's the point.
A-Maze-ing Fools is a comedy-mystery one-shot adventure for 2–3 players using characters of levels 3–4, designed to run in a single session of 2–3 hours with zero preparation beyond reading the book.
It starts with a missing cat. It ends with a goddess.
A mundane errand leads a small party beneath the edge of town into a sealed prison not built of stone — but of law. Leira, goddess of illusion, has been imprisoned here for centuries by a Marut construct of Mechanus that found her very existence to be a violation of cosmic order. The verdict was unanimous. The imprisonment was lawful. And she has been waiting, very patiently, for exactly the kind of people who would follow a cat through a crack in a wall.
Her only remaining defense is the one thing she was built for: misdirection. Each time the party descends to a new level, she scrambles her soul's signature across the party's bodies — and someone at the table is suddenly playing someone else's character.
What's Inside:
- 4-act structure with an estimated 2–3 hour runtime
- The Soul Swap mechanic — players rotate character sheets between acts, playing each other's characters
- 6 fully statted creatures including the Maze Shade, Fussy Shade, Maze Warden, Ordinance Guards, Behavioral Tracker, and the final chamber Warden
- April in Fox Form and Leira Unbound — two playable stat blocks for the adventure's central character
- 4 pre-generated characters designed so that swapping sheets mid-adventure creates interesting dynamics
- 4 battle maps covering every major encounter area
- 3 resolution paths including a traditional ending, a difficult third path, and a thread that leads somewhere much larger
- Complete appendix on Leira, the Maruts, and why they are genuinely irreconcilable forces
- Pressure plate corridor diagram and Soul Swap rotation reference for the DM
- Zero prep required — pick it up and run it tonight
Perfect For:
- DMs who want a session that surprises experienced players
- Small groups of 2–3 players looking for something genuinely different
- Tables that want comedy and emotional weight in the same evening
- April Fools Day, convention one-shots, or any night you want to run something memorable
- The dungeon doesn't want to kill you. It just wants to confuse you. Completely.
Pick up A-Maze-ing Fools and run it this weekend — no prep required.
