Getting Started With Sourdough | And The "Why" Behind Each Step
You tried sourdough once and it didn't work. Or you made a few loaves, felt like you were getting somewhere, then life got busy and you never went back. Or you've watched sourdough videos — the stretch and folds, the scoring patterns, the banneton baskets — and decided it was too much effort for a loaf of bread.
This is not a book about fancy technique. No stretch and folds, no bench rests, no complicated shaping. Just a simple method that gets a real, edible loaf of sourdough out of your oven — one you will actually want to eat. Once you learn how to make an edible loaf, you have a solid foundation to explore different techniques that will help you achieve your favourite loaf of bread with a method that suits your lifestyle.
I learned how to make sourdough before it was cool. Through working at bakeries, reading books, watching videos, and I have even bought unhelpful sourdough guides before. So I know what a low-effort guide feels like — generic steps, no real explanation, no photos, no nuggets of wisdom. This is not that. I would not put my name on something I was not proud of. This book has helped people and I am proud of that.
This book is my baby. I have put a lot of thought and effort into it and I genuinely want it to help you bake your first edible loaf and find joy in the process. Every step is there for a reason. Every explanation is written the way I wish someone had explained it to me when I was starting out.
This guide is for you if:
✓ You have never made bread and do not know where to start
✓ You tried sourdough before and it did not work
✓ You followed a recipe step by step and still pulled something disappointing out of the oven — with no idea what went wrong
✓ You want to understand the why, not just follow steps blindly
✓ You just want a simple method that produces a real, edible loaf
What is inside this 60-page guide:
✓ Day-by-day starter guide with photos and exactly what to look for each day
✓ The full beginner loaf method with the why explained at every step
✓ Starter troubleshooting — what went wrong and how to fix it
✓ Loaf troubleshooting — how to read your result and improve next time
✓ Seasonal feeding tips for summer and winter kitchens
✓ Low-maintenance mode for busy weeks
✓ Vacation mode for longer stretches away
✓ A Dutch oven alternative so you can bake with what you already have
I taught myself sourdough the hard way — inedible loaves, a lot of reading, watching whatever was on the internet before it was cool, and eventually working in professional bread bakeries across Canada. Now I am home with my son, baking for my family and teaching others how to. I wrote this so you do not have to figure it out the hard way like I did.
If your starter is active, you follow the steps, and you practice a little patience — you will end up with something you are proud of.
