A dark and blackish brown with noticeable duotone and medium granulation, collected in the mountains of Lebanon. Gathered and washed by hand, it retains the profile of the land, as well an organic character with minute colour and grain size variations.

I've done my best to reproduce the colour faithfully, but different screens can display hues differently. Please be prepared for a slight variation from what you see.

Suitable for: Earth colours are chemically stable and suitable for use in any art medium.

To use: Add just enough water to wet the pigment. An equal amount of any water-based binding medium can then be mixed with it. Adding gum arabic solution creates watercolour, and I recommend using a small mortar-pestle to mix them so they merge really well.

Tips:

  • Some binders (e.g. gum arabic) give the pigment a "wet look" that is a different, slightly yellower colour than the dry powder. To keep the painted colour as close to the powder as possible, add only as little gum as you can get away with.
  • Natural earths produce granulation to an individual degree, but if you wish, you can avoid that by only picking up colour from the top of your prepared paint. The earthy sediment, which causes the granulation, will remain at the bottom.

Safety data: Ochres are not toxic at all, but all non-organic dust can be harmful to the lungs if inhaled, so handle with caution while your pigment powder is dry.
