History and Heritage Yorkshire Magazine March 2025
Welcome to the March 2025 Edition of History and Heritage Yorkshire!
Inside this month’s edition, you’ll find the usual fascinating mix of stories, along with a special focus on family history - each piece with a strong Yorkshire connection. We’re thrilled to be part of the search for a missing 1838 portrait of James Clough, a Bradford tradesman immortalised in paint. Once a striking signboard outside Oddy’s shop, this remarkable work by renowned artist John Hunter Thompson disappeared after an auction in the 1950s. Can you help Anne trace this lost piece of her family’s history and Bradford’s past?
We’re also delighted to feature family history pieces from professional genealogist and travel expert Ginger Aarons, as well as regular contributor Meryl White.
It's not all family history this month though. United States based Medievalist, Kate Eakman, explores the story of Whitby Abbey through the eyes of the Venerable Bede, while David Pickersgill launches a new series on lesser-known historic buildings, beginning with the fascinating history of Crayke Castle. Acclaimed author Chris Nickson meanwhile takes us back to wartime Leeds ahead of his latest novel No Precious Truth's release. There really is something for everyone.
History and Heritage Yorkshire is available on a “pay what you want” basis—no minimum price, just whatever you can afford. While contributions help sustain the magazine, I firmly believe that personal circumstances should never be a barrier to exploring history and heritage. This way, everyone can enjoy the stories of Yorkshire’s past.
