Gentle People

Gentle People is a classic top down crescent shawl, worked up in a simple garter gradient. This project was the most satisfying to knit out of all the patterns in the book, and I definitely see myself knitting more of these in the future. Sometimes you don’t need to armour up; sometimes you just need to have gentle people around you. I did a linocut piece of art a few years ago when I was having a hard time with some hurtful friends; the linocut said, “I only want gentle people around me.” I’ve kept the gentle people in my life close to me. A Gentle Person is someone who is careful with your feelings, cares about you, and who tries their best to do good by you. Keep an eye out for gentle people in your life!

Yarn:

3 skeins of Hinterland Range in colourway “Honey” or 594 yards (543 metres) of worsted weight yarn.

Needles:

4.5mm (US 7) circular needles in at least a 24” (60cm) cord. Or whatever size needles it takes you to get gauge.

Notions:

Whichever tools you prefer to weave in ends, and whichever tools you prefer to block your shawls.

Gauge:

14 stitches and 36 rows = 4”
(10cm) square knit flat in garter and blocked.

On Modifying Size:

You can make this shawl bigger or smaller as you’d like! Just work more or less row repeats in each section. For example, if you like the garter ridges that are farthest apart, just work more repeats of Rows 1-6 in Part 1. If you’d like to have a much larger garter border, work more repeats of Row 1 & 2 in Part 3.
