Collective Composting with LEGO: A grief-informed practice for teams and communities

Grief doesn't move well through spreadsheets. It struggles inside tidy frameworks and resists the cold logic of cause and effect. When teams, communities, or groups navigate endings whether after projects conclude, during restructuring, or when something collectively valued unravels, the grief often stays stuck in analysis or gets bypassed entirely in the rush to "move forward."

This practice offers a different pathway.

Collective Composting invites participants to build first and speak second using LEGO or other building materials to create embodied expressions of what's ending before language catches up. It's simple, accessible, and profoundly effective at surfacing the grief we don't know how to name.

What you'll receive:

  • A complete facilitator guide covering what the practice does, who it's for, and how to hold the space
  • Step-by-step instructions for running the practice (1-4 hours)
  • Reflection questions for integration
  • Guidance on common things that arise and how to work with them

This is one of my signature practices. I've used it extensively with organisational teams, community groups, and creative collectives. It creates space for grief to be witnessed and honoured without needing to be fixed, reframed, or rushed into learning.

You don't need LEGO Serious Play certification. You need comfort holding grief-informed group work, a building medium (LEGO, clay, recycled materials), and the willingness to let the hands speak first.
